How to check if a sofa will fit through your door

A sofa is carried through a doorway on its side, so what has to fit is its cross-section — depth × height — not its length. Measure these five things and the checker above does the rest:

  1. Doorway width — the narrowest point, inside the frame.
  2. Door frame height — floor to the underside of the frame.
  3. Hallway width — at its narrowest point.
  4. Staircase (if the sofa goes upstairs) — stair width and the height from the steps to the ceiling.
  5. Any turn in the stairs — the width and depth of the landing where they turn.

Frequently asked questions

What width does a sofa need to fit through a door?

A sofa needs an opening at least as wide as the smaller of its depth or height, because it is carried through on its side. In the Sofa Mall range that is typically 63–70 cm, so most sofas pass through a standard UK 762 mm (30 inch) internal door.

Will a sofa fit if it is longer than my door frame is tall?

Usually yes. A one-piece sofa longer than the door frame is carried in upright and tilted at an angle, so its length does not block the doorway. What has to fit is the sofa's cross-section — its depth by height. The checker flags these deliveries as a tight fit.

Why is a corner sofa harder to fit through a door?

Most corner sofas arrive in three parts: two long sides and a square corner section. The square corner piece cannot be tilted diagonally, so its height must fit within the door width — typically 63–70 cm. That piece, not the longest side, usually decides whether a corner sofa fits.

Do the sofa legs need to come off for delivery?

Sofa Mall sofas are delivered with the legs packed separately, so every sofa is carried at its lowest possible height. All dimensions used by this checker are measured without the legs fitted.

What happens if the sofa doesn't fit on delivery day?

If a sofa cannot be brought into the home, the delivery is returned and a £69 return collection charge applies. Checking your doorway, hallway and staircase with this free tool before ordering takes about two minutes and avoids that cost.

Which sofas fit through narrow doorways?

Fully modular sofas are the safest choice because each seat arrives as a separate piece — the Vinci modular range fits through any opening wider than 60 cm. Dismantlable sofa beds and recliner suites fit through doorways from about 50 cm.
